A petition has started on Change.org for the construction of a skatepark at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, requesting a facility in a similar style of the Venice Beach Park in California.

The concept is relatively similar for a beachfront bowl and skatepark like Bondi in Sydney, or the park at St. Kilda Beach in Melbourne. Essentially, the petitioners are asking for a big, eye-catching park on the foreshore of Surfers Paradise that would become an iconic event space and tourist attraction.

The petition, started by a company called Cairo Skateboards, reads, “Based on the design concept of the Venice Beach Park, a similar design on the beachfront in Surfers Paradise would do incredible things for the community [and] would become a tourist attraction for young skaters worldwide. Opening the public Surfers Paradise Beach Front Park would also open doors to holding special events like X-Games and inviting special guests like pro-skaters for brand exposure events.”

The petition also acknowledges that the closest park is Pizzey, in Miami, which is a 15-minute drive from Surfers. It concludes, “Signing this petition is an indication that you agree and support the idea and would encourage it to be presented to council.”
