Mark Waters was a pioneer skateboard photographer, and a mover and shaker at Sole Technology – he helped each and every Australian Emerica, éS and Etnies rider during his 15 years of working for the brands. More recently, he was the Executive Director of the International Association of Skateboard Companies, and Go Skateboarding Day foundations, organiser of the Skateboarding Hall of Fame, the former USA Skateboarding Team Manager, and the Production Manager for Thrasher’s live music events. Mark caught COVID on December 3 and spent most of the past month in ICU on a ventilator.

“It’s devastating to hear about the passing of Mark Waters from Covid-19,” Tony Hawk shared on his Instagram earlier today. “He was a skateboarder in the truest sense, always looking out for others and keeping the soul and culture of skating as a top priority in whatever he did. We skated together regularly in our younger days, and I can’t say enough good things about his contributions to our world. There is a link in my bio if you feel compelled to help his grief-stricken family.”

Tony also shared this eloquent eulogy written by his wife, Claudine:

Thank you all again for all your incredible support, prayers and PMA. It has meant the world to us and has given us comfort during this difficult time.

We are heartbroken to tell you that Mark passed away at 6:46am today. He was transferred to UCI early this morning to be placed on an ECMO machine. His condition worsened and the medical team did everything they could to save him. UCI allowed us to visit and we’re so grateful we got to see him.

We’re are devastated, heartbroken and in shock. The world has lost an amazing husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and mentor. Your stories and photos are a testament to a life well lived. Although it was cut short, he leaves a lasting legacy.

We have been so fortunate to have Mark’s sisters here with us and the support of family and friends. We appreciate your understanding while we take time to grieve.

As a reminder, we followed all of the safety protocols during this pandemic. It only took one instance where Mark was exposed by people not following the recommended guidelines. Please don’t let Mark’s life be in vain. Please, please, wear your mask, social distance and wash your hands. It could be a matter of life and death.
